The Effect of Feeling: Pleasant and Unpleasant

Elana Rosenbaum, MS, MSW, LICSW, reveals a simple technique for reducing anxiety

Elana Rosenbaum, MS, LICSW

Controlling the cognitive problems of anxiety like catastrophizing, excessive worry or rumination challenge most people with anxiety.

But simple awareness practices can keep clients from drowning in their thoughts or feelings or getting stuck there.

One such tool is my Emotional Assessment Log for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

Awareness of feelings include emotions, but it also refers to bringing awareness to feeling tones, the experiencing of pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. These feeling tones often influence how we respond to mental and physical events, both inside and outside ourselves.

We are hard wired to protect ourselves, and by resisting what we consider to be unpleasant and craving or clinging to what we perceive as pleasant, we perpetuate suffering. Often this is unconscious...

But bringing awareness to these feelings and resulting thoughts and sensations opens the door to change - and greater happiness.

These diaries are designed to help clients take a step back and observe thoughts, sensations and feelings to discover habitual responses and examine their effects.

With awareness there is choice. Without it, the same patterns are blindly repeated.
